The fact that Formula One teams are not required to manufacture every component of a vehicle themselves may surprise new followers of the sport. In reality, teams only need to construct their chassis in order to compete in Formula One; they are free to employ outside engine suppliers for their powertrains. In Formula One, what kind of engine does Haas use?
Haas has a long-standing partnership with Ferrari regarding driver contracts and engine supply despite being a relatively new Formula One team. As a result, Haas has been utilising Ferrari components since their arrival in 2016 and will continue to do so in 2022.
Haas has chosen to employ Ferrari as its engine supplier during their time in Formula One, despite the fact that the majority of the top teams in the sport, including Mercedes and Ferrari, have used their own unique engines in their chassis.

Haas boss touts Ferrari engine as “the best engine presently” following significant performance increase in 2022
After seeing himself in a better position in Bahrain, Haas CEO Guenther Steiner declares the Ferrari engine to be the greatest engine on the field.
Ferrari’s performance decline in 2019 had a two-year impact on both them and their clients, Alfa Romeo and Haas. Now that the Ferrari engine received a big boost in the second half of 2021, both teams appeared to need to improve this year.
With Kevin Magnussen, Haas improved from last year’s last-place finish on the grid to a P7 in qualifying. Mick Schumacher, on the other hand, finished in P12 despite reaching Q2.
Valtteri Bottas’ Alfa Romeo finished sixth, and rookie Guanyu Zhou finished fifteenth. At the same time, Ferarri had a very successful race on Saturday, with Charles Leclerc taking the lead and Carlos Sainz finishing third.
Given the improvement in performance among all the Ferrari-powered vehicles, Haas CEO Guenther Steiner asserts that the Italian team’s engine is the best one available.

Steiner opined that the Ferrari engine is currently the best engine. “Since they were in the same situation as us, I genuinely believe it, and it gives them a lot of credit. They were subjected to a lot of abuse about it.”
They simply returned, completed their research, and brought something excellent.
According to Charles Leclerc, Alfa Romeo and Haas’ good qualifying performances at the Bahrain Grand Prix illustrate the “strong” move Ferrari has taken with its Formula 1 engine for 2022.
Leclerc won the pole position for the opening race of the current season over Max Verstappen of Red Bull, while Valtteri Bottas and Kevin Magnussen of the Ferrari-powered Alfa and Haas, which placed second-to-last and last in the 2021 constructors’ standings, finished sixth and seventh, respectively.
Following a severe loss in engine performance as a result of the manufacturer’s settlement with the FIA over the contentious configuration of its engine in 2019, Ferrari and its customer squads experienced two extremely challenging seasons in 2020 and 2021.
However, Ferrari team chief Mattia Binotto had stated prior to the Bahrain race weekend that he believed his team had made up a 25bhp power deficit to Mercedes and Honda (now branded as Red Bull Powertrains) with its work for 2022, and as a result, his drivers and those at Ferrari’s customer squads went on to enjoy strong performances in Saturday’s qualifying at the Sakhir track.
It felt better than last year, and it was a start in the right direction, he added. I haven’t seen the qualifying data yet.
“I believe that the Alfa and Haas clearly demonstrate that progress has been made.
“However, it’s important to remember how hard they worked and how quick they were around curves. I believe both the engine and the car are to blame.
But when it comes to us, it’s unquestionably a step forward, and we now appear to be fairly powerful on the straights. So it’s encouraging to see this.
Third-place qualifier Carlos Sainz claimed Ferrari “cannot disregard the progress done on the power unit side,” but he cautioned his team to continue looking for power gains wherever feasible owing to the danger posed by Red Bull and Mercedes (F1 engine designs are now frozen until 2025).
In the Bahrain Grand Prix qualifying, Red Bull’s Sergio Perez set the fastest time at 323.2 km/h, while Verstappen came in second at 0.3 km/h slower.
Leclerc and Sainz were in 11th and 12th place for Ferrari, which has larger sidepods than its nearest competitor and may be slowed down by more straight-line drag as a result. Their respective average speeds were 316.6 and 315.9 km/h.
Mick Schumacher was the top Ferrari-powered driver in the qualifying speed trap, with his best qualifying time of the year in 12th place at 318.4 km/h, placing him sixth overall with Magnussen in seventh.
Sainz stated, “A huge thank you and fantastic job to everyone in the power unit department. “Because it’s undoubtedly assisting the opposing teams as well.
“We need to keep going since neither Max nor the Merc were slow in the straights at all.
“In such case, we must continue to make progress. However, this year seems to be a step in the right direction, which is encouraging for the engine department.

All the engine manufacturers, including Ferrari, are now closely clustered together, according to Italian motorsport expert Guenther Steiner, who is also the team principal of the Haas Formula One Team.
After the summer break in 2019, Ferrari briefly held the title of the most potent engine on the grid. However, the FIA issued technical guidelines to ban the Scuderia from using that power, and by 2020, the Ferrari power unit was likely the weakest.
However, the Scuderia has unquestionably made progress in the engine department, and their 2021 version has helped propel them into a race with McLaren at the top of the midfield.
Furthermore, according to Steiner, whose Haas team uses Ferrari power units, any differences between the manufacturers are now “minimal.”
Due to the new regulations, all teams must have a completely new car by 2022. Ferrari has already announced their desire to do the same with an entirely new engine.
Steiner is aware of the anticipated new power unit design and expects it would propel Ferrari to the forefront, which would also be extremely advantageous for Haas.
“There is a lot of development work going on and new fuel is available by 2022, but I’m not sure. Everyone needs to make changes and practically develop significant things; after that, I’m not sure who will be in charge. However, I am aware that Ferrari has been working on the power unit for the upcoming season for some time. Consequently, hopefully Ferrari will lead.”
Haas has already dedicated their entire attention to creating the vehicle for 2022. Even though the VF-21 team is trailing the midfield pack at the back, there are no upgrades planned.
Williams and Alfa Romeo, two of their 2020 competitors, have both made progress, allowing them to overtake Haas in the lower middle standings.
This year, Haas won’t use Ferrari’s improved engine.
Guenther Steiner claims that Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin will not use Ferrari’s improved engine this season since it won’t “do anything” for Haas at the moment.
Haas, an American team, has spent the majority of this season running at the very back of the pack because it prefers to concentrate on developing its rookie drivers over the vehicle.
With Steiner having previously declared that P5 will be the objective, the squad is entirely focused on 2022.
Although Steiner said that neither Schumacher nor Mazepin will use the updated system this season, he is nevertheless pleased to see that Ferrari’s new hybrid system appears to be a success because that will be the engine that powers the VF-22 in next year’s championship.
“I believe we decided against using the hybrid system because even that action would not have been very beneficial to us,” he said.
“However, I do see a positive, as this would undoubtedly be the hybrid system, a system for which we should really look forward for it next year.
“I was in Maranello with Gene Haas before Monza, and they showed us what they had accomplished. It’s never easy to gauge how good anything is.
“Even if their engine is good and the competition’s engines are extremely good, they are still behind, so I think they put in the correct amount of effort to develop a better engine, and next year they have to be on par with, or ideally even better than, all the competition.”
The Italian responded, “It’s a Haas car; it’s neither a Ferrari nor a Dallara.” “I’ve given several explanations of that.
“We have staff members at Ferrari who are all employed by Haas and who are not controlled or operated by Ferrari since it is also illegal or against the rules.
The benefit of Dallara is that they have good employees, so you can just go into the resources and you don’t have to hire people for the full year. We still have about 30 people working exclusively for us there. However, occasionally we round them up when it’s the end of the year or the beginning of the next year and the workload is getting heavy.
I would estimate that there are 30 Haas employees at Dallara and 70–80 Haas employees at the Maranello headquarters.
Haas is prepared for a 2022 Ferrari PU upgrade.
When Ferrari adopts its new power unit in 2022, Haas should clearly gain from it, according to team president Guenther Steiner.
Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz received grid penalties in Russia and Turkey, respectively, as a result of Ferrari updating its power unit over the course of the recent races. Sainz tearing through the field at Istanbul Park and Leclerc finishing a comfortable fourth in Austin last time out demonstrate the performance improvement, and Steiner is looking forward to receiving the update next year after deciding not to try to utilise it in 2021.
The gains, according to Steiner, are what they should be. “I would say that the improvement they received wouldn’t have much of an impact on us this year, but it’s nice that the upgrade would also benefit the engine for the following year, and the good news is that they will then improve the system.
“They tested it out this year so it should be reliable next year because reliability problems often arise when introducing new things. I’m happier as the Ferrari engine gets better.
