We have already informed you of what we know about the brand-new Sedona 2022, but it now seems that there will be a new twist: the Sedona will forgo its North American appellation in favor of the “Carnival” nickname used in the rest of the world.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s fueleconomy.gov website now features information on the 2022 Kia Carnival, a great betrayer of information about future vehicles. It verifies that the Carnival will be powered by an eight-speed automated transmission and a 3.5-liter V-6 engine. Oh, and it reveals the EPA fuel-economy ratings for the 2022 Carnival, which are 19 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined, an improvement over the 18/24/21 provided by the current Sedona’s 3.3-liter V-6.
To learn more about the name change, we contacted Kia Motors America, but they have not yet issued an official statement. Since its debut in 1998, Kia’s minivan has been marketed domestically under the name Carnival; in North America, Great Britain, and a few other regions, it is marketed under the name Sedona.
We have to admit that we’re a little surprised that Kia would choose to replace the Sedona name, which evokes feelings of grand family outings through the American Southwest’s arid beauty, with one that conjures up images of spooky calliope music and dozens of clowns pouring out from the Carnival’s smooth flanks. But perhaps it’s just us. And this isn’t the only significant name change Kia has made recently; most recently, the long-running Optima midsize sedan’s known-quantity name was replaced with “K5” (also used elsewhere in the world).
In any case, we won’t have to wait much longer to learn more information than the EPA has already disclosed. A later date this year, the attractive new Carnival, which is already for sale in South Korea, should make its way to American shores.

When the Carnival reaches dealers this quarter, in addition to all of the higher-strength steels, repairers will run into extra “sound absorbent and insulating elements to minimize road, wind, and engine noise,” according to Kia.
Other bodily and technical information that may be of interest is:
- For better gas mileage, Kia claimed to have made aerodynamic adjustments to the wheels, mirrors, and front bumper.
