The two-letter word is one of 300 new words that have been added to the most recent edition of Merriam-Official Webster’s Scrabble Players Dictionary.
The words macaron, facepalm, emoji, puggle, and yuck can also now be used in a Scrabble game.
The inclusion of “OK” has, however, split some Scrabble players more than any other word in the list. Scrabble’s rules forbid using abbreviations like IQ or TV that are always written in capital letters. Even though the word “okay” has long been recognized as a verb in the dictionary, this would appear to rule it out.
However, Merriam-Webster asserts that the use of lowercase letters to spell OK is becoming in popularity and should therefore be included in the dictionary.
Whereas only okay was previously approved, the lowercase version ok is now acknowledged as established, making it a playable word.
However, not all Scrabble players, especially at the higher levels of the game, agree with OK. Its inclusion could lead to “a lot of other initialisms that are not particularly word-like,” according to Jackson Smylie, who is among the top 10 tournament Scrabble players in North America.
The director of Scrabble competitions and competitive player Judy Cole agreed that OK was “definitely more prevalent than a lot of the other words in the word list.”
Regardless of how good a word it is, there is little doubt that OK will alter the game of Scrabble in terms of strategy. After all, any seasoned player will tell you that the most crucial words in the game are two-letter words.
Because there were no acceptable two-letter phrases ending in K before OK, it was frequently employed defensively to block off specific areas of the board.
