The Kia Soul has a lot of appeal thanks to its boxy, small posture. It’s a shape that has been with us for a while but manages to stay fresh. Perhaps this is due to the roofline and proportions being just right; large body panels and angular shapes serve to compliment rather than overpower these features.
The Soul is a little more attentive and muted inside. The dash is almost entirely of black plastic, although there are smatterings of chrome and shiny trim that liven up the monotonous areas.
The Soul is available in base, Plus, and Exclaim trims, each with a separate engine and transmission (Kia employs the punctuation “+” and “!” marks, which we’ll skip for clarity).
Base models come with a sluggish, 6-speed manual or automatic, 1.6-liter inline-4 engine with 130 horsepower. It’s suitable for city driving, but we’ll be honest: base cars are sluggish.
The 161-hp 2.0-liter inline-4 in Plus models has a 6-speed automated that somewhat quickens the pace. These vehicles perform better on highways, although a seeking 6-speed has a tendency to lessen the enjoyment.
The Elantra Sport’s 201-hp turbo-4 is available on the new top-of-the-line Exclaim versions, giving the Soul more assurance without necessarily making it more sporty. It only comes with a slick shifting 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which we really enjoy. However, once the turbo variants are cranked past 4,000 rpm, they still howl like the other models.
Although its ride is a little rough and its elevated center of gravity doesn’t assist much on curvy roads, the Soul always maintains composure on the road.
The internal packaging of the Soul is excellent, offering space for four adults and a ton of gear. More than 24 cubic feet of gear may be crammed behind the back seats when the seats are up. More than 60 cubes may fit inside the Soul when the 60/40 split back seats are folded down.
The compact footprint of the Soul is large enough to accommodate most body types. Our favorite feature: rear passengers have more legroom than 39 inches, which is more than many SUVs have.
The Soul has received top “Good” ratings from the IIHS and federal testers, who have given it a five-star overall rating. It falls short of receiving better grades for a few reasons.
Among them? The cost of installing a rearview camera on base models is more than $2,000 dollars. The rearview camera is included in a $1,560 (or $500 for lower models) optional package that costs $500 and calls for an automatic transmission.
Aside from our complaints about the rearview camera, the Soul comes with a 60/40-split folding back seat, air conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity, satellite radio, and cloth seats. Due to the absence of some items like cruise control and a center console armrest, we would refrain from describing that base equipment as superb.
a plethora of choices 8.0-inch touchscreens, ventilated seats, and leather are also options for bundles. Although its beginning price of more than $20,000 looks like a far cry from the $16,840 entrance price for base models, plus models may strike the sweet spot for many purchasers.
A heavy hand on the options list can push the Soul’s price tag above $25,000, but at least buyers will be able to brag about choosing a vehicle with a “Primo Package” when it leaves the factory, which is good.
