A caravan can a VW Touareg pull, right?
The most recent Volkswagen Touareg is competitive with the very finest large 4x4s when evaluated just on its towing capacity. Both its stability and speed are really amazing.
The 3.0 liter V6 diesel engine, with 258 horsepower, provides acceleration. The Touareg can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 9.8 seconds, even when towing a large twin-axle Swift trailer.
The VW Touareg seems content to remain there the entire day once it reached the legal maximum. None of our test drivers noticed the caravan moving significantly until they had reached speeds considerably exceeding 60 mph. Al-Ko ATC sensors on the caravan displayed exceptional stability when slowing down from high speeds. The Touareg aced the lane-change test as well, changing lanes quickly and sharply while boosting the driver’s confidence.
The large Volkswagen was similarly prepared to brake. On a dry test track, braking from 30 mph required only 10.8 meters, stopping straight and true with almost no shunting from the tourer.
The Touareg had no trouble passing our hill-start test. The electronic handbrake and “auto hold” feature kept the car and caravan in place on the 1-in-6 incline, and all that was required to tow them to the top was a light push of the throttle.
With the optional air suspension (2190), which offers drivers the choice of sport, normal, and comfort settings, the Escape model we tested has higher suspension for more serious off-roading. It’s a good system, but most drivers will probably find that the default configuration achieves the best balance the most of the time.
Our practicality judges were able to mark most of the characteristics they look for in a practical tow car with huge ticks thanks to its self-levelling suspension, trailer stability system, and reversing camera. Another plus was the large boot.
However, the seven-seat Land Rover Discovery is more flexible and roomier than the five-seat Touareg, and future resale values aren’t anticipated to be as high as those of the Land Rover.
Licences issued from 1 January 1997
The MAM of your trailer is crucial if you got your driving test on or after January 1, 1997. Legally, you are permitted to:
- As long as the combined MAM of the trailer and towing vehicle is no higher than 3,500kg, you may pull a trailer weighing more than 750kg MAM.
- Drive a car or van with a maximum authorized mass (MAM) of 3,500kg while towing a trailer with a maximum MAM of 750kg.
Since the MAM of a horse trailer is most likely to be around 750 kg, you should be cautious about the MAM or GVW of the vehicle you drive. For instance, the GVW of a Kia Sorento is 2,510 kg, so your trailer must have a MAM of 990 kg or less. This is equivalent to a small trailer, such as a Sinclair.
You must pass the B+E automobile and trailer driving test if you want to tow or drive anything heavier.
Licences issued before 1 January 1997
Drivers who are more experienced are authorized to operate a vehicle:
- a minibus pulling a trailer weighing more than 750 kg MAM.
- A vehicle and trailer combination with a gross train weight of up to 8,250kg (GTW).

The VW Tiguan is an excellent tow vehicle. Although it might seem a bit expensive, sometimes you get what you pay for.
The best tow vehicles must be stable, and the Tiguan is incredibly stable. At 60 mph, it gives the driver confidence and only slightly tugs on the back when passing an HGV.
The Tiguan is also obviously adept at towing in a variety of circumstances. The combination of the tightly adjusted suspension and the powerful diesel engine ensures steady movement on uneven rural roads, which is something that the greatest towing vehicles should always offer.
The VW still makes an impression even without a caravan pulling it. At high speeds, it is quiet and comfortable, but the large alloy wheels can take up some road noise. Despite being an SUV, the Tiguan handles better than most competitors on B-roads and corners neatly and precisely.
Inside, we wonder if the updated dashboard actually represents an improvement. In our opinion, traditional buttons and rotary controls are considerably more convenient for mobile use. However, the Tiguan is one of the greatest five-seaters available at this price point in terms of room and functionality. The VW is a wonderful choice for campers who tend to overpack because of its particularly impressive boot space.

It is crucial to have the proper towbar installed, regardless of the type you select. It should always be a brand-new towbar, never a used one, as the history of a towbar from another vehicle is unknown. Along with the towbar electrics kit, the towbar should be specifically tailored for the make and model of your car. These integrate with your vehicle’s towing-related safety systems, therefore it’s crucial that they are installed properly by a qualified technician in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.
