Overall thoughts on the Highlander, before we get into the weeds…
Although the Highlander has outstanding front crash prevention technology and offers a hybrid model (since we like to attempt to save the world), the Highlander would not be our first pick for a 3-row SUV for families for the following reasons:
The second row is not arranged nicely. For instance, even the tightest combination of forward-facing car seats wouldn’t fit three crosswise. At a reasonably lean 5’1″, I was able to just barely fit between two rear-facing Clek convertible seats. Anyone taller or utilizing broader car seats won’t be able to.
Due to the seat belt buckles in the second row being all fastened forward of the seat crease (bight) and on webbing stalks that were a bit too long for many forward-facing car seats, it was difficult to establish a secure installation with many forward-facing car seats. Even when we employed the seat back recline method to aid us, quite a few of the seats we tested did not attach securely with the seat belt in the Highlander’s second row!
The third row is extremely narrow. Yes, you can raise the second row by up to 6 inches to give the third row more room, but doing so will leave the second row with insufficient space, which will need you to raise the front seats. A shallow third row increases your chance of suffering a head injury since the most common way to sustain a brain injury in an accident is to knock your head on anything; the closer your head is to the seat in front of you, the more probable it is that you will do so.
The seat cushion in the third row of the car is so low and strangely sloped that, at 5’1″, the only part of my body that was on it was my buttocks; my thighs and knees were far away. Not only was this extremely unpleasant, but it also made the lap belt fit worse by putting it on my tummy rather than my thighs.
One forward-facing child can fit at maximum in the third row of seats because there is only one tether anchor (in the middle seat).
There is very little trunk room behind the third row. Because the person in the third row is essentially riding in the trunk and all the items back there can easily fly on top of them in a crash, it is not safe to have half the third row folded down to fit goods while the other half is up for a child or adult to ride in. You don’t want a stroller to fly over your head in a crash at 30 mph because everything will weigh 20 to 25 times more than usual!
